Google could be set to release a smartwatch

In the wake of a successful rollout of the first branded Google phone, the Pixel, the Silicon Valley tech giant may be readying a smartwatch via a partnership with LG.smart bracelet watch bluetooth

A fresh report from tech reporter Evan Blass says the “Nexus-style” partnership will yield the first Android Wear 2.0 device, to be announced February 9. (Nexus phones – which Google has no plans to continue after the release of its Pixel phones in October – were co-branded devices typically created in partnership with Asian phone suppliers such as LG, Huawei, and HTC.)
The upshot, this will be a LG branded smartwatch with joint
Google marketing, according to Blass. So, closer to the Nexus model, which was marketed by Google but the primary branding was the device maker.

The report is based on “marketing material” shared with VentureBeat, where Blass works. Google did not respond to a request for comment.The circular Android Wear 2.0 watch will reportedly go on sale immediately after the announcement. Watch specs include a larger “flagship” model with a higher-capacity battery, more RAM, GPS, NFC (near-field communication) for Android Pay, heart rate sensor, and cellular connectivity (3G/LTE) built in.

That latter feature would be an important distinction from the Apple Watch Series 2, which relies on the iPhone for cellular connectivity. Watches with cellular connectivity, like the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition and Samsung Gear S3 frontier model, allow you to get email and texts without being tethered to a phone.

LG’s Watch Urbane 2nd Edition -- which has classic wristwatch styling -- has been available from Verizon and AT&T since last year. Verizon’s ad copy states that you can text or call from your watch using your current smartphone number.
Both of the rumored Google watches, including the lower-end model, have 4GB of storage, OLED displays, water and dust resistance, Apple iOS compatibility, and a digital crown (for navigating features on the watch), like the Apple Watch, according to the report.

Importantly, the watches come with Google Assistant, a highly-refined intelligent personal assistant that Google introduced on its Pixel phones.

Google’s entry into the market with a smartwatch running Android Wear 2.0, Google's next Android operating system for smartwatches and wearables, could engender another heavyweight brawl with arch-rival Apple, the current smartwatch market leader.

Samsung unveils its latest smartwatch — the Galaxy Watch

Samsung is back with a new smartwatch and fresh branding. The company announced its Galaxy Watch at its annual Galaxy Note phone event today. It features 3G / LTE connectivity and charges wirelessly. There will be two models: a 46mm silver version and smaller 42mm black and rose gold versions. The company’s forgoing its previous Gear branding and is instead tying the watch more directly to its Galaxy smartphone and tablet line.best 3G Smart Watch

The Galaxy Watch will be available in the US on August 24th and in Korea on August 31st. Additional markets will receive it on September 14th. In the US, the Galaxy Watch Bluetooth 42mm version will cost $329.99 while the 46mm version will cost $349.99. It’ll be available through Amazon, Best Buy. The LTE version will be available through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, later this year. We don’t have that pricing yet. Anyone who preorders the Bluetooth models through before September 8th will receive a free watch band.

The company says its improved battery life should provide “several days” of use on a single charge. The Galaxy Watch also features some health-oriented features, including heart rate monitoring to build a baseline for each user. So when it detects that your heart is racing, it’ll prompt you to relax. It also tracks fitness and allows users to pick their activity. It’ll track sleep patterns as well, and it will try to qualify how well you’re sleeping.

The watch looks similar to the Gear S2 Classic with its less-obvious bezel. Last year’s watch — the Gear Sport — was designed for athletes, and Samsung is shying away from that specific use case with the Galaxy Watch. It’s definitely intended to be an everyday timepiece that can handle fitness tracking along with other more daily activities.

Why doesn’t this connector fit my cable?

Why I replaced Google Wifi with Synology's mesh networking gear

Router reviews are normally about speeds and feeds. They generally answer whether or not routers being reviewed are faster for Wi-Fi than other routers, and what connections and protocols they offer. They are an almost never-ending series of price/performance comparisons. CNET has an excellent, in-depth review of the Synology RT2600ac which has had the benefit of CNET Labs performance testing.WIFI GPS Router

This review is not like that. This review is almost entirely subjective. In it, I compare the marriage of the Synology RT2600ac and MR2200ac against Google Wifi in my very challenging house.

The Synology RT2600ac is an AC2600 4x4 quad stream router. It's part of a router class that, right now, includes fast -- but not the fastest -- Wi-Fi routers. When CNET initially reviewed the RT2600ac, it was at the top of its game in terms of speed. Even two years later, it consistently gets great marks for its performance. There's a lot more to the RT2600ac, but we'll come back to that later.
The Synology MR2200ac is, to me, where the magic is. The MR2200ac is a mesh router. You could just buy an MR2200ac and use that as your only Wi-Fi router, but if you combine a few MR2200ac devices with an RT2600ac, it can transform the Wi-Fi in your home or office by creating a seamless, always-available mesh of solid Wi-Fi coverage.

This was also the promise of Google Wifi. You could (and still can) buy a bunch of Google Wifi pucks or, as I did, a Google Wifi-compatible Asus OnHub and then some Google Wifi pucks, and create a mesh network as well.

Wearable electronics are finding new applications in healthcare monitoring, intelligent textiles, smartphones, Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The problem has always been the bulk of the lithium ion battery needed to power such devices. Now, researchers at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have developed a highly flexible, high-energy Textile Lithium Battery that offers more stable, durable and safe energy supply for wearable electronics. Professor Zheng Zijian, who leads the ITC research team, said in the news release, "Wearable technology has been named as the next global big market opportunity after smartphones. Global market revenues for wearable devices are forecasted to grow by leaps and bounds, of over 20% annually, to reach US$100 billion by 2024. As all wearable electronics will require wearable energy supply, our novel technology in fabricating Textile Lithium Battery offers promising solution to a wide array of next-generation applications, ranging from healthcare, infotainment, sports, aerospace, fashion, IoT to any sensing or tracking uses that may even exceed our imagination of today." 

The new technology applies PolyU's patented Polymer-Assisted Metal Deposition (PAMD), in which, “highly conductive metal, copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) are uniformly and conformally deposited onto pre-treated fabrics.” According to PolyU, such fabricated metallic fabrics, featuring low sheet resistance and large surface area, serve as current collectors in battery. Active materials are added that act as cathode and anode, the metallic fabrics, together with separator and electrolyte, are assembled into the Textile Lithium Battery.

24M, a startup battery company founded as a spin-off from MIT, claims it has made a breakthrough in creating semi-solid lithium-ion battery cells with an energy density exceeding 350Wh per kg.cheap Lithium battery pack

MIT professor yet Ming Chiang hit upon the idea of mixing active materials in electrolytes together before forming the cell, rather than ‘injecting’ the electrolyte into a slurry, thought to be a much more efficient process for creating cells.

In other words, compositionally distinct catholytes and anolytes are created, kept apart by an ionically conductive, non-permeable separator.

“Unlike a conventional technology where they use a solvent and sort of deposit the material and then throw it all up and then inject the electrolyte at the end, we mix the electrolyte at the beginning,” Joe Adiletta, senior director of products for 24M, said.

“Of course we mix the anode and the cathode separately so we can put a different electrolyte in the anode, called the anolyte or the cathode – catholyte. Typically the separator not only allows the ions to pass but allows the electrolyte to pass. So if you use a traditional separator, eventually the materials will diffuse and you get a homogenous mixture, which is exactly what you don’t want in this design.”

Keeping the anolyte and catholytes separated, Adiletta said, can open up “huge options” on which electrolytes to choose, meaning individual batteries or systems can be tailored to “specific approaches in the battery”. This means the ‘dual electrolyte’ technology can be applied to LFP cells, more commonly used in stationary storage, or NMC cells, higher energy density and typically used for electric cars, to give two prominent examples.

24M will open up its first pilot production line towards the end of this year, which Adiletta stressed is small, at 100MWh, but is nonetheless the first high volume production of this type of technology. This way of making higher energy density versions of lithium batteries will also enable ways to “tune the electrolyte, improve the voltage, make fast charge, slow discharge technologies – there’s a huge number of options,” Adiletta said.

A new report by Benchmark Minerals, first cited by CleanTechnica, shows battery makers are working quickly to meet growing demand for new lithium-ion battery cells from automakers.Lithium Battery Cell voltage

According to the company's Battery Factory Data, battery suppliers ramped up their forecast supply from 922 gigawatt-hours in 2023 to 965 in February, an increase of 4 percent in February alone. Extrapolated to an annualized forecast, that would increase battery supplies available in that year by 50 percent this year alone.
It's unclear, of course, whether growth in supply forecasts will continue soaring on that trajectory for the rest of the year, but constraints in battery supplies have already emerged as a likely obstacle to planned electric-car production by the middle of the next decade.

The Volkswagen Group alone has ramped up its investment in developing future electric cars to $50 billion by 2023. Other automakers including BMW, Daimler (Mercedes-Benz), General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler.So far, most electric car batteries have come from just a handful of suppliers, including Korean LG Chem, Nissan's SAIC, CATL, Panasonic (for Teslas), Samsung, and SK Innovation.

That has left some automakers planning big investments in electric cars at the mercy of battery suppliers and led to delays in some products and likely to lower production of some models than the automakers could sell. 

The Benchmark Minerals report shows production capacity for lithium-ion battery growing to almost 1.6 terawatt-hours by 2028.

Tesla is a company that its critics love to hate. A swarm of short sellers have bet $10 billion that the electric carmaker will fail. They tweet incessantly about Tesla’s loss-making operations and even fly drones over its facilities to verify production figures. Elon Musk, Tesla’s erratic CEO, has berated these short-sellers as “haters.”Electric Vehicle Battery technology

Betting against Tesla’s prospects may profit short-sellers, but it could end up dashing America’s only hope to build supply chains for a technology that will reshape the future economy: the lithium-ion (li-ion) battery. Originally commercialized by Sony in the 1990s, these batteries’ high-energy density, long recharging cycles, lightweight structure, and relative safety make them ideal for powering everything including laptops, smartphones, and electric vehicles.

The potential of electric vehicles to transform global transport will make li-ion batteries even more integral to the global economy. But such vehicles are still costly compared to their gas-guzzling predecessors. That’s because li-ion batteries are expensive and constitute a serious proportion of their total cost. Buy a Tesla Model 3, for instance, and an estimated one-third of the $35,000 price tag is from the battery. So the commercialization of electric vehicles depends largely on lowering the cost of batteries.

The good news is that the industry consensus has li-ion battery costs falling over the next decade from the current $176 per kilowatt hour of electrical energy to less than $100/kWh, the threshold when electric vehicles reach cost parity with gasoline cars. At that point, the li-ion battery could well become as important to global transport as the oil that powers cars today.

Should that happen, it would propel a transition away from oil and toward a more sustainable energy future. That future could see the global electric vehicle stock rise from 3.1 million in 2017 to 228 million by 2030, causing a 6,700 percent increase in demand for li-ion batteries to power vehicles and creating a market that is expected to be valued at $100 billion by 2025.

But if demand jumps as sharply as analysts believe, li-ion batteries will require enormous scaling up of manufacturing to lower per-unit cost. That means countries that control li-ion battery supply chains will entrench their advantages in a crucial aspect of the new transportation economy.

Supply chains may seem abstract, but they are vital to the global economy. A supply chain concentrated mostly in a single country could allow for the emergence of effective monopolists over particular inputs. This situation would magnify that country’s ability to set prices, establish technical standards, lock down access to raw materials, and even exert geopolitical influence by controlling supply. It’s also in any country’s national interest to develop domestic high-tech industries, especially in future growth sectors such as li-ion batteries.

In early November, Japan-based UV LED manufacturer, Nitride Semiconductors, set-up a 100% owned subsidiary, Micro Nitride, to develop and manufacture micro UV-LED chips for micro-LED displays.indoor and outdoor led display

Initially targeting flexible displays for next generation smartphones, Nitride Semiconductors is ploughing 100 million yen - nearly £700,000 - into its new venture and expects displays to reach commercial markets come 2020.

"LED prices are coming down and down, and Chinese companies are getting bigger and bigger," says Nitride Semiconductors president and chief executive, Yoshihiko Muramoto. "Japanese LED makers are now in a difficult situation and need to add value, we need to make displays and not just LEDs, so we have established our new company."

Nitride Semiconductors unveiled its first UV LED in 2000 and has since delivered myriad wafers, chips and modules, to UV LED markets worldwide. Its new subsidiary will now produce micro UV-LED chips that comprise the micro UV-LED and a red, green, blue (RGB) phosphor to generate 'natural' white light.

Importantly, Muramoto reckons this UV-LED and RGB phosphor approach eases chip manufacture and leads to better-performing displays than existing methods. Today's fledgling micro-LED displays have typically been manufactured with red, blue and green LEDs or a blue LED that excites red and green phosphors.

However, many issues have stymied development. Take the RGB microLED array; mounting different semiconductor structures at high density isn't easy. What's more, current, voltage and response speeds vary from LED to LED, complicating chip control.

Meanwhile, for the micro blue LED excitation method, only the blue light is directly emitted while the red and green light result from phosphor conversion with an associated time lag. "Synchronising the colour response can be very complicated and we just don't have to manage any time lag," says Muramoto. "Our micro UV LEDs are also easy to mount and we have a fifty year history of using phosphor; it is very natural for us to used UV LEDs for displays and lighting."

The new subsidiary will focus on technology development, rather than manufacturing. As Muramoto puts it: "Japanese companies should aim to develop strong technologies and patents... there are many big LED manufacturers around the world and we can outsource our technology to them."

And with the technology in tow, the chief executive says his company's micro UV-LEDs are ready for mass manufacture, claiming fabrication is 'not so difficult'. Importantly, his company is also working with Japan-based display supplier, V Technology, on display manufacture.

The future of LED displays has never been brighter as AV integrators, designers and end-user customers come to understand how to better assess the total cost of ownership (TCO) of LED and LCD solutions, according to the results of a recently completed online industry survey of 454 participants conducted by NanoLumens, award-winning creators of LED visualization solutions.
According to NanoLumens Vice President of Global Marketing and Business Development Joe’ Lloyd, AV integrators accounted for 50% of the survey participants, with architects, designers, and end-users comprising the other 50% of the respondents. The 24-question survey, conducted between November 2018 and February 2019, aimed to reveal how perceptions about LED and LCD display technologies compared among industry professionals, what their experiences with each technology were, and what they thought the future might hold for each display format.indoor fixed led display 

“The results of this survey indicate that display industry experts assign primary value to longevity, durability, adaptability, and performance,” Lloyd said. “But their customers still primarily value the opposite – price over performance – which is understandable given the fact that LCD displays are still the more common solution in the marketplace.”

According to Lloyd, once respondents moved beyond the consideration of initial purchase cost to the more complex issues that determine the total cost of ownership over the life of the display, a more nuanced picture emerged from the survey.
The survey showed that, while industry experts might not agree if the two display technologies require the same frequency of service, they do recognize that LED displays are built in a way that avoids full replacement while LCD displays are built in a way that may actually exacerbate it.

“While LED displays – at least those built by NanoLumens – are composed of interchangeable and interlocking subcomponent boards, LCD displays are not,” Lloyd stressed. “This means that repairs for LED displays are much more likely to be quick fixes with spare parts rather than the wholesale replacements often necessitated with LCD malfunctions.”

The focus of SmaryVIZ appears to be sparse arrays of μLEDs for automotive interior applications. Over the next two and a half years, according to Osram, it aims to build the foundations of transparent high-resolution direct-viewing displays – intending to produce a demonstrator at its conclusion in October 2021.
“Implementation of such concepts and applications requires in-depth studies of the underlying physical principles that are in-part entirely different than today’s macro LED chips,” said Osram.
Transparent and flexible image encoders will feature, as will transparent substrates based on indium gallium zinc oxide thin-film transistors (IGZO TFTs) for controlling individual pixels.
“This approach allows for quasi-transparent surfaces, which can be filled with content only if the μLEDs are switched to active,” said Osram. “Employing such an active matrix backplane for the driver electronics allows image rendering with μLEDs to produce visualization scenarios with ultra-high resolution.”
Unlike the monolithic Plessey approach, which produces micro-displays, SmaryVIZ will be developing automated ways to transfer high numbers of μLED die from source wafers to the backplane electronics.
Requirements include ~1.5μm positioning accuracy of chips <40μm across. This “will require entirely new technological approaches, which will be addressed within the project”< said Osram. “The consortium partners have the necessary expertise to realise the envisioned technological breakthrough.”
ASM Amicra is a production automation specialist with knowledge of photonic component micro assembly.
Fraunhofer IISB (Institute for integrated systems and device technology) specialises in power electronics and technologies for producing semiconductor devices. It will design and manufacture transparent electronic circuits.
Osram SmartVIZ project leader Hubert Halbritter described his company’s role, “as a project partner with in-depth experience in micro-pixel imaging components that will research efficient, high-luminance pixels. Along with our partners, we aim to gain technology leadership in one of the key future technology markets”.

Though news that Apple was hoping to transition the Apple Watch away from OLED screens to cutting-edge Micro LED displays broke last year, reports differed on the timing. The typically reliable Bloomberg called the screens “a few years” away, while hit-and-miss DigiTimes suggested Micro LED production for Watches could start in 2018 or 2019. Today, the Economic Daily News says Apple is working with two Taiwanese companies to bring Micro LED screens to the Watch “as soon as next year.”outdoor fixed led display

This development is important for several reasons. For users, Micro LED screens could enable Apple Watches to become thinner and lighter than before, a welcome change from somewhat chunky initial models, or the screens might let Apple preserve the same size while delivering much longer run times. The latter approach could advance Watch use independent of a nearby iPhone.

Additionally, the new screens will supposedly be brighter, more color accurate, and potentially faster in refresh rate than their predecessors, all while consuming less energy. While there haven’t been many complaints about the current screens in Apple Watches, Micro LEDs would enable the screens to look better and give the devices another leg up over Samsung and rival options.

New suppliers Yuchuang and Suibao will reportedly handle Micro LED wafer supply and display assembly, respectively, with a 2020 street date for finished products using the modules. Economic Daily News suggests the change will help Apple reduce its dependence on Korean OLED suppliers, at first impacting Watch screens supplied by LG and later iPhone screens supplied by both Samsung and LG. Apple reportedly also planned to use Micro LEDs in an augmented reality headset, the current status of which remains unclear.
